About Picked

It started with a marigold.

I picked up a pack of Queen Sophia marigold seeds on a whim in February of 2019. I didn't expect much, but figured I may get a few flowers to help deter pests from my tomato plants. I transplanted them to their permanent home among the English lavender lining our fenced-in greenhouse structure protecting my precious tomatoes from the hungry (but beautiful) deer that frequent our yard, and I didn't think much more of them.

About a month later, the little green spindly babies had grown to mounds of sunny orange and goldenrod, with streaks of burgundy lining the spend blooms. I decided it was probably a good idea to deadhead them to keep that mesmerizing show running as long as possible. When I picked off the first dead flower, I realized the dry papery outside was holding dozens of seeds inside. I saved a few for myself for the following year, and continued on my deadheading mission.

The more I thought about it, the more wasteful it felt to discard all those seeds - I wanted to share the beauty of marigolds with the world, and with all the seeds coming off those 10 plants, I really could! That's when I thought of Picked.

I saved the seeds from everything I grew that year, snapping photos of each plant along the way and jotting down notes on how to start, care for, harvest, and use each one. I wanted Picked to be a holistic experience for the home gardener - somewhere they could come to not only buy their seeds, but to learn everything about growing them.

My hope is to spread the joy of gardening with as many people as possible. Plants reward you exponentially as long as you put in the time, care, and a little water.
